High School, for many of us, was the best time of our lives, or at least it should be. But for many teens high school can be a harrowing, if not down right nasty, experience. It used to be you only had two options: Stick it out and take your knocks, or drop-out and float from minimum wage job to minimum wage job. Now, thanks to technology, we have a new field of options, Online High Schools.
Yes, it's true, Grandpa, those newfangled computers can do more than play video games or look up song lyrics. A whole world of knowledge exists at our fingertips and you don't even have to sit in a school from 7AM to 3PM. You can complete course work right from the comfort of your home, heck, you don't even have to sit, you could stand if that suits you.
In fact, that is the key to success for many young scholars. The ability to earn a sound, well-rounded education from an accredited Online High School when they want it, in the environment that best suits them, could well indeed be the difference between a well educated and successful future and a, well, not so successful future. But I won't dwell on the negative. I have seen success within the realm of Online Education first hand as a student and as a teacher.
As a student, I must say that I found the freedom and control to be ever so pleasing not to mention the fact that I was able to work quickly when I understood the material and I could take as long as needed to master any knowledge that I wasn't able to procure so readily. When it comes to asking question or obtaining clarifications, email, text, chat and video technologies make the Online High School, or in my case Master level, courses even more effective especially for those of us who aren't the most comfortable speaking out in class. It also allows the instructor(s) to respond with a more thorough and thoughtful answer thereby reducing the chances of students misunderstanding content.
My experiences teaching Online High School have been even more rewarding. Seeing students who would normally be frustrated or distracted be successful repeatedly is an amazing event. For many students, the traditional brick and mortar school experience is rife with barricades and hurdles, many completely unrelated to education. But when those hurdles and barricades are removed, the results can be impressive.
I've had students transform from prison bound gangster to college bound professional. I've witnessed High School students with the mathematical ability of 2nd graders elevate themselves to passing status on State exams. I've seen those who have struggled to read transform into published writers. And it's not just the students who lack basic skills that benefit from Online High School. It also allows those students with higher than average aptitude to be challenged and push past their perceived pace without being punished for working ahead of the class.
I believe the opportunity to obtain a quality education is not a privilege, it is a right. But along with that right to education students also have the right to acquire that education with the least amount of barriers possible and that is what Online High School is truly about.
